About this site
The Alpine is an independent publication launched in August 2024 by Andrew Robulack. If you subscribe today, you'll get full access to the website as well as email newsletters about new content when it's available.
Who am I?
I'm a Whitehorse-based consultant specializing in online communications and business optimization. You can learn more about me on my personal website.
Why did I start this site?
This is an experiment.
I'm an avid consumer of news and information about the world around me, particularly the Yukon. The problem is, it's becoming harder and harder to gain a comprehensive understanding of my community. Long-established media outlets are disappearing. The outlets that remain are a shadow of their former selves. They publish much less content than they used to. Worse, those local outlets compete to report on what are essentially the same stories, creating needless redundancy and leaving huge gaps in coverage.
Plus, new information is all over the place. I have to hunt around multiple websites and news feeds daily to gather enough news and information to feel like I have the basest level of understanding of what's going on in Whitehorse and the Yukon. It takes time and energy. Still, I never feel like I fully understand the community.
So I wondered: What if there was one site where I could find all of the local news together? What if I didn't have to henpeck the web periodically through the day to find that rare morsel of new information? What if it all came to me at once each day in an email?
The Alpine is, in a sense, my daily graze of local news and information. It's my time spent educating myself about my community. Then sharing it with you. So please subscribe if you're interested. And let me know if you find it useful.
I'm trying to be sensitive to the fact that there are hard-working journalists producing the content I'm aggregating on The Alpine. They're pounding the pavement while I'm riding my desk. So I am, of course, providing links to the original, full stories with the intention of providing full credit. I'd be interested to know if you think I'm doing enough in that regard.
Am I making any money off this?
I'm not making money off this endeavour. In fact, I've had to spend some money to get this machine up and running. But I'm also not looking to rob publishers of income, so I hope you click through to stories and support their advertisers or whatever method they're using to generate revenue.
All that said, if you're gaining benefit from my efforts here, a tip wouldn't be remiss...
